How to install Windows software with winget

winget is Microsoft's built-in package manager. Install and update programs from one command, each pulled from the developer's official source.

By the Softvault team ·

winget, the Windows Package Manager, comes built into Windows 11 and recent Windows 10 versions. Instead of hunting for installers, you run one command and it fetches the program from the developer's official source and installs it — and later updates everything at once.

Check you have winget

Open Terminal (right-click Start › Terminal) and run winget --version. If you get a version number you're ready. If not, install or update "App Installer" from the Microsoft Store, then open a new terminal.

Install and manage programs

  • winget search vlc — find a package
  • winget install VideoLAN.VLC — install it by its ID
  • winget upgrade --all — update everything
  • winget uninstall VideoLAN.VLC — remove it
  • winget list — see what's installed

Every program on this site shows its exact winget install command on its page, so you can copy and paste it.

Is it safe?

winget packages point at the developer's official download, and Microsoft moderates the catalogue. Keep Windows Security turned on — it scans installers as they run.
